Baghdad hosts the 34th summit of the League of Arab States

Today, Baghdad will host the 34th summit of the League of Arab States in light of the continued Israeli raids on Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis is exacerbated, and after a Gulf tour of US President Donald Trump, who confirmed his desire to "possess" the sector.
The flags of the 22 Arab countries decorated the streets of the Iraqi capital, which are witnessing, similar to other cities in the country, relatively stability after four decades of conflicts and wars.
Regional changes
This summit coincides with regional changes that include the work of the new Syrian authorities headed by Ahmed Al -Sharaa to open a new page with the Arabs and the West, and to weaken the Gaza war, Iran and its allies at a time when Washington and Tehran continue their nuclear negotiations.
Besides Arab officials, United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, whose country last year admitted to the Palestinian state, which is one of the most critical European leaders for Israel.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was one of the first Arab leaders who arrived in Baghdad on Friday afternoon. A diplomatic source in Baghdad said that most of the Gulf states will be represented at the ministerial level.
Comprehensive initiative
Professor of strategic and international studies at the University of Baghdad, Ihsan Al -Shammari, said that the summit will discuss "a comprehensive initiative towards (stop) the war in Gaza and reconstruction and provide humanitarian aid", in addition to "supporting the transitional phase in Syria, and supporting the new government in Lebanon."
Al -Shammari pointed out that "the privacy of this summit is that it comes at a time when Israel talks about a new Middle East that certainly includes a large part of the Arab countries."
Tensions and War
Baghdad hosted this meeting the last time in 2012 at the height of security tensions in Iraq, and a bloody civil war in Syria during the era of ousted Syrian President Bashar al -Assad.
This summit comes after an emergency meeting held in Cairo in March, during which Arab leaders adopt a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza that notes the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Strip and represents an alternative proposal for a proposal presented by Trump to displace the population and put the sector under Washington's control.
